Darkness & Light
I am fascinated in how we see the world around us differently, both from a physical and a mental perspective. I believe this fascination stems from my own vision issues of being diagnosed with extreme short-sightedness since childhood.
The starting point for this project is a photograph I took of people walking down Grafton Street in strong winter sunlight. From this I created a number of silhouette/shadow drawings using pencil, charcoal and oil pastels. I then proceeded to photocopy the original reference photograph and cut out individual silhouettes so as to create additional compositions. This led to the creation of a series of pieces of silhouetted figures trapped inside individual cubes in both 2D (collage, pencil, pen, digital) and 3D (cardboard cubes and life-sized cube). This work is a direct response in the wake of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, specifically about people being largely trapped in their homes.
