Throughout history in all cultures there has been a collective understanding of a connection between the feminine and the natural world. This understanding is still in place today; we make this evident when we refer to nature as 'Mother Nature'. Interestingly, we’re presumably making connections between the cis female and the “giving” earth, the shared ability to create life and then in the ideal situation, to nurture it. However, inverse to this, what can be said for the vengeful earth and the natural disasters we see recurring? Can this be akin to that of our understanding; nature as female?
My body of work aims to visually outline the female metaphor for nature and begin to reimagine it in a thought provoking manner. The outcomes from this project will hopefully invite the viewer to consider and reflect on the projection of what is stereotypically feminine onto our natural world.
