Aoife Coss explores the absence of a sense of home experienced in rental spaces. This research is informed by her own personal experience of renting in Dublin over the past 5 years.
The work shows the reality of a lack of ownership and in particular, the sense of home that comes with short term renting. This theme is explored by making records of her past rented spaces through memory.
Using painting and screen printing, the rental spaces are broken down into three colours to simplify the spaces. Showing them as they are found and as they are left. In most instances, you are confined to just a bedroom, with no time or chance to personalise it in order to make these spaces feel like home. Naming the spaces to their location furthers the theme that no matter where you are, most rental rooms are the same; a bed, a window and a countdown to your next move.
