The everyday view on nature
My work explores how nature has an ability to make us feel something beyond all possibility of calculation. I am specifically drawn to trees and capturing the elements of their growth, movement and structure in a simplistic way through photography and mark making.
My approach to this subject matter began quite intrusively, by gathering branches, bringing them into my studio and creating three dimensional line drawings through structure, light and shadow casting.
My mono prints are drawings taken from the structures I have created with the branches, while using the branches themselves to make the marks on the plate.
My work since Lockdown and the closure of NCAD, further developed into documenting the trees through drawing and photography; taking my time to really observe the tree in its natural habitat. The drawings are a way to fully analyse and document my interest in the branches and their movement.
